After the death of M. E. BLOCH in 1799, his voluminous manuscript of the Systema ichthyologiae was completed, finished and published by J. G. SCHNEIDER in 1801. In the present paper the history of the origin of that important work is given, the autorship of the new fish names is discussed and a translation of the informative introduction of that work, written by SCHNEIDER, is presented.
