Background: Appendicitis is a common condition which frequently requires emergency surgery and has postoperative wound infection has been reported in few cases which can be influenced by many factors, the most important being surgical skill and technique and the criteria used to define the infection. Bacteria play an important role in appendicitis and the local application of antibiotics or antiseptics can reduce the incidence of wound infection. In this study, we analyse the microbiology culture of acute appendicectomy specimen and its correlation with wound infection. Methods: This is a randomised control test study which was carried out 56 patients with appendicitis. The swab was taken from appendix lumen after appendicectomy and wound infection was sent to laboratory to carry out histology findings and infective organisms respectively. All patients were followed postoperatively for wound infection. Results: Bacteria was isolated from 60% swabs taken from appendix lumen in which gram-negative bacilli isolated as commonest bacteria among which perforated appendicitis shows 66.7% isolation of bacteria. Wound infection among patients underwent appendicectomy was 21%. Gram-negative bacilli were isolated from almost all swabs (100%) taken from wound infection. Conclusions: From this study and results, it shows gram negative bacilli was the commonest organisms isolated from the swabs taken from both appendix lumen and wound infection.

Background: Ear piercing and ornament wearing is a historical tradition. Dilated ear lobe and torn earlobe usually results from sudden trauma or continuous use of heavy earrings. Various surgical techniques have been described for the correction of the same. Each procedure has its own pros and cons. The choice will depend on individual preferences and the defect, partial or total, and should offer a lower chance of recurrence. The corrections can be made with or without preservation of the earring orifice. The aim and objectives of this study was to present and discuss a novel technique of repairing the partial and complete cleft ear practiced at Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, Karnataka, India.

Methods: A prospective study was done on the use of a novel technique “Step advancement flap” in the repair of partial and complete cleft ear lobe in 18 patients.

Results: A good post-operative results were achieved in all the patients with maintained ear lobe thickness and a sutured skin scar away from the center.

Conclusions: Our technique has an advantage of maintaining the normal ear lobe thickness and the sutured skin scar away from the center on either side of the ear lobule compared to other techniques. Thus the neo piercing can be done at a fresh central skin avoiding the skin scar.

Background: Tissue glue or adhesives are the recent advances in closure of the skin wound. They have been used as an alternative to the sutures, staples and plasters. They have been found to be cosmetically better compared to other modes of wound closure. Whether the tissue glues are economically feasible for routine use has to be found out. The aims and objectives of this study is to find out the cost-effectiveness of tissue glue in comparison with traditional suture technique in thyroid surgeries.

Methods: This is a prospective study to find out the economic aspect of tissue glue in comparison with silk suture in fifty three patients who underwent thyroidectomy at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

Results: The overall cost for tissue glue procedure was significantly less when compared to silk suture technique.

Conclusions: Iso amyl-2-cyanoacrylate is excellent tissue glue. Though the initial cost of tissue glue is higher compared to silk sutures, the overall cost including the anaesthetic cost, hospital stay and reviews is considerably less. Thus we conclude that the tissue glue is economically cheaper compared to suture methods.

Epidermoid cysts are benign lesions, characterized by cystic spaces lined by simple squamous epithelium (epidermal cyst), containing skin adnexa ("true" dermoid cyst) or tissues of all three germ layers (teratoid cyst). 7% of all cases of epidermoid and dermoid cysts are seen in the head and neck. There is often a diagnostic dilemma with the more common cystic lesions of this region. The most common are the epidermal cysts which present as nodular and fluctuant subcutaneous lesions and they are seen mainly in the acne-prone areas like the head, neck and the back. The presence of benign cystic lesions in the salivary glands is extremely rare. We are reporting a rare case of a 12-year old female child who presented with a soft swelling on the left side of the face. A diagnosis of an epidermoid cyst was given on cytology. An enucleation of the cyst was performed and the histopathology confirmed the above diagnosis.
