The global disaster trends are worrisome to all stakeholders. The ugly consequences of flood disasters include loss of lives and property, disruption of economic activities, creating insecurity like theft, robbery, and many more. The consequence also puts pressure on the government to spend limited resources on rehabilitation and compensation of flood victims. Hence, this paper addresses flood-disaster preparedness and flood control in Nigeria through the criminological exploration of Lagos metropolis. The study applied exploratory and descriptive methods and relied on data generated through content analysis of books, journals, and online materials. This paper adopted the social control theory by Hirsch and broken window theory by George Kelly. The finding showed that people lack preparedness for the disaster events; they break urban master plans and structures to obstruct to flood. The anti-social attitude like indiscriminate dumping of solid wastes into drainages and carnal and weak enforcement of environmental laws. Also, undue cutting down of trees, lack of environmental policy and lack of political will to implement the existing ones, poor attitude to social and environmental policies are among the factors that are responsible for poor preparedness for flood disaster in Lagos Metropolis. The paper recommends effective public enlightenment, public advocacy on environmental safety and health security, rigorous enforcement of environmental laws, and an urban renewal scheme. This paper will benefit the ministries of environment and physical planning, the state, and the federal emergency agencies, non-governmental agencies, and researchers in the security and emergency studies.
There are various security challenges facing societies around the world. Kidnapping is one challenge that undermines peace and stability in the globe. Kidnapping leads to death of victims, bodily harm, loss of properties and worsening economic conditions. To tackle kidnapping, social security is one valuable measure put in place. However, social security is bedeviled with challenges like corruption, mismanagement, lack of political will, ethnicity, bad policy and programmes. Therefore, this paper addresses the challenges of social security and kidnapping in South-West, Nigeria. The study intends to fill the gap created by shortage of scholarly materials to explore challenges of social security and kidnapping in South-West Nigeria. The data were obtained secondarily through the content analysis of peer reviewed journals, edited textbooks, and credible online resources. It anchors on social control theory by Travis Hirsch. Findings revealed that corruption, lack of political will, ethnicity, religiosity and other challenges are working against social security drives to combat kidnapping in Nigeria. The paper recommends effective youth empowerment schemes to bring to the shore the potentials among the youths. This paper will be useful by improving knowledge on the social security and kidnapping, improve the extant literature on social security and kidnapping, the policy-makers, employment of labour, organized private sectors and researchers in the field of social and management sciences will find it beneficial.
Kidnapping is a global issue that affects every aspect of human endeavour. This violent crime is linked to wide spread unemployment, poor governance, border insecurity, illegal possession of arms and ammunitions. Kidnapping for ransom has consequences for global peace and security. In Nigeria, kidnapping creates apprehension in almost all spheres of human endeavors. It leads to loss of lives and properties, death, loss of investment, reduced educational standard and diversion of government from critical areas. The previous studies have not been able to deal with this area. To address inadequate literature on kidnapping and improve on the body of knowledge, this study addresses Marcus Felson routine activity and waves of kidnapping. The study adopts qualitative research method. Data was obtained secondarily through the content analysis of peer-reviewed journals, edited book chapters, newspaper reports and credible online sources. Findings show kidnappers who were the motivated offenders, adopted their victims because of adequate protection. The paper recommends adequate electronic security by government at all levels. This paper will be significant to individuals, employers, security organizations, government at various levels, non-governmental organizations and researcher’s in the field of social and management sciences.
Every emergency has its security implications, corona virus 2019 is not an exception. This health emergency with its policy implications like lockdown of social and economic activities has implications for national security. One of the consequences of COVID-19 pandemic is street crime. The health emergency resulted in street crimes like theft, snatching of bags, phones, jewelleries and other valuables, robbery, burglary, street fighting and assaults and battery. These led to loss of lives and properties. Hence, this paper addresses the significant relationship between COVID-19 emergency and street crimes in Nigeria. The study applies qualitative and quantitative research methods. Data were sourced secondarily through the content analysis of edited textbooks, peer-reviewed journals and credible online resources. Findings showed that COVID-19 emergency and its policy measures like total lockdown of the economy and social activities, movement restriction and consequential loss of means of livelihood instigated street crimes. The paper recommends equitable distribution of palliatives, effective social safety net and adequate preparation for health emergency and increased human capacity building. This study will be useful to individuals, governments at all levels, National Centre for Disease Control, World Health Organization, non-governmental organizations and researchers in social and health sciences.
