Intimate Relationships, Family, and Life Course ty on the part of those of service and manual worker origins. Several intervening variables help explain upward mobility, particularly of male Nisei and Sansei children relative to their Issei and Nisei fathers: (1) camp residents who were in the two younger "life stage" age brackets as compared to those in the two older "life stage" brackets;(2) those who had initially resettled during and/or after the war in the Midwest or East; and (3) those who identified themselves as Protestants rather than as Buddhists.Readers who wish to learn more about the historical background that led to the war and about the development of Nihonmachis prior to World War II are invited to examine the first two chapters. The findings reported therein are largely applicable to the several California communities with substantial concentrations of former Japanese American internees. An important limitation of the study noted by the researchers is the small sample size, which prevented refined multivariate analyses. Scholars and lay readers should be grateful to the Denshô, the Japanese American Legacy Project, and to Fugita and Fernandez for bringing to fruition the only book available examining the longterm structural and attitudinal effects on American citizens denied their Constitutional rights
