Context: Adiponectin is an adipokine that is secreted by adipocytes and acts to prevent obesity and obesity-related disorders. The high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in modern dietary habits in working-age populations, urban areas in particular, is known to play a role in adiponectin secretion. However, previous studies showed inconclusive results. Aim: The study aims to determine the association of the dietary omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids ratio with adiponectin levels in office workers in Jakarta, Indonesia. Settings and Design: This cross-sectional study included 55 office workers in East Jakarta, Indonesia. Methods: Data were collected via questionnaire, 3-day food record, anthropometric measurement, and serum collection. Statistical analysis used: Independent t test was applied to assess the relationship between subjects characteristics and dietary intake with high molecular weight adiponectin levels. Association of dietary omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratio and adiponectin were evaluated using Pearson correlation test (P < 0.05). Results: There is no statistically significant difference in adiponectin levels based on waist circumference category, as well as categories of physical activity, household income levels, total energy, and total fat intake. Conversely, in female subjects (P = 0.000), subjects with normal body mass index (P = 0.000), higher education levels (P = 0.031), and nonsmoking subjects (P = 0.019), significantly higher adiponectin levels are obtained. The ratio of dietary omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids is negatively correlated with adiponectin (P = 0.004, r = –0.383). Conclusions: The decrease in the ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids is inversely related to higher level of adiponectin, indicating that dietary changes may potentially play a role in prevention strategies for obesity and obesity-related diseases.
Every year around the world, the prevalence of obesity is increasing. Obesity and its associated diseases have become some of the most pressing health problems in developed and developing countries. In its development, adipocytes dysfunction and chronic low-grade inflammation occur in obesity will stimulate diseases at higher risk including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), atherosclerosis, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. Western diet and sedentary lifestyle are thought to have significantly contributed to the increase in obesity recently. Diet modification is a sound method to prevent obesity and its complications. Nevertheless, the concern lies in the ratio of omega-6 towards omega-3 fatty acids intake, which in its current state indicates an imparity. Omega-3 and omega-6 are two essential fatty acids that emerge as dominant factors in obesity through adiponectin. Adiponectin refers to a protein hormone conceived by adipocytes to prevent obesity and its subsequent complications by increasing insulin sensitivity, fatty acid oxidation, anti-inflammatory, and antiaterogenic. This study aims to determine the mechanism and the role of fatty acids in omega-6 towards those within omega-3 by using adiponectin as the indicator of advancement to obesity and its underlying diseases.
Antepartum depression is a mental health issue that is frequently ignored and often leads to suicidal behaviours. The harmful effects of antepartum depression are not only experienced by mothers, but also by children in the future. Depression due to pregnancy is usually attributed to several causes, including the biological component. Biological shifts that arise during gestation interrupt the maternal stress protection mechanism, one of which is the dysregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA-axis) resulting in hypersecretion of cortisol. Excessive release of cortisol as a stress hormone has been correlated with depressive symptoms, particularly throughout pregnancy. Recently, dietary factors, in particular dietary fiber, have become of concern as component that is recognized to attenuate stress hormones. The dietary fiber that is ingested will be digested by intestinal bacteria and will produce short-chain fatty acids as the essential metabolites. These metabolites are known to play a role in various brain functions, including HPA-axis through various means. The objective of this research is aimed at determining the function of dietary fiber within cortisol as a biomarker of the central stress response system, particularly throughout pregnancy.
