The results of this study demonstrate that treatment parameters can be determined initially using in vitro models and then translated to in vivo research and clinical practice. Furthermore, this study establishes that infrared light with optimized parameters promotes accelerated nerve regeneration and improved functional recovery in a surgically repaired peripheral nerve.
TLT was comparable to fluoxetine in improving the behavioral outcome after CMS. TLT did not cause weight loss, which is consistently seen in patients treated with fluoxetine. This study demonstrates that TLT has potential as an effective treatment for depression.
The lack of significant improvement in survival and motor performance indicates study interventions were ineffective in altering disease progression in the G93A SOD1 mice. Our findings have potential implications for the conceptual use of light to treat other neurodegenerative diseases that have been linked to mitochondrial dysfunction.
