A study is reported which seeks to compare violent and non‐violent offenders serving Borstal Training sentences. Inspection was made of a wide range of family variables, general and criminal background variables, and individual characteristics. Violent offenders were shown to be similar to non‐violent offenders on most of the variables investigated: exceptions were greater experience of parental violence; nature of previous criminal activity; significantly higher scores on tests of non‐verbal intelligence and literacy; and more external scores on the personality dimension of locus of control. The implications of this study for theories of violent delinquency and management of violent offenders are discussed.
