Parallel with the increase in environmental problems, the importance of design of environmentally friendly products has become more important together with the design for remanufacture. This paper presents the application of quality function deployment (QFD) methodology in the design of products for remanufacture. The main goal of this paper is to determine the engineering characteristics of automobile engines that firms have to focus on, in order to design automobile engines for remanufacture. In this paper, how a product can be designed for remanufacture using QFD and house of quality (HOQ) has been highlighted. A questionnaire survey was conducted on automobile engine refurbishing & remanufacturing facilities in order to find out what is required of the products which are remanufactured. With the establishment of the HOQ, the engineering characteristics that firms should focus on for designing automobile engines for remanufacture have been found as 'position of the parts' and ' types of parts used'.
Six sigma provides a methodology for problem solving by using project management tools systematically. The primary aim of six sigma applications is minimizing defects. Minimizing defects will ensure the outputs and customers' satisfaction increase and the costs decrease. However, the number of the firms that state that they couldn't get the results from six sigma programs as they expected is not few. The main reason for failure of six sigma programs is not to balance the costs with gains of six sigma projects. So, evaluating the performance of six sigma projects is an important issue for the firms that apply six sigma programs. In this paper, data envelopment analysis was used to evaluate the performance of six sigma projects which is stated as critical success factor for six sigma programs. Data envelopment analysis which is based on linear programming helps to determine the efficient and inefficient decision making units by comparing the relative efficiencies of decision making units. Recently, there are some papers in the literature which apply data envelopment analysis for evaluating the performance of R&D and software projects. There are also some papers which discuss the application of data envelopment analysis in the selection of six sigma projects. However evaluating the performance of six sigma projects with data envelopment analysis was not discussed comprehensively in the literature. This paper is original by showing that data envelopment analysis which can be used in evaluating the performance of organizations can also be used for evaluating the performance of six sigma projects. The application of data envelopment analysis for evaluating the performance of six sigma projects was shown by a case study.
Electronic waste refers to thousands of discarded electronic devices such as computers, televisions, cell phones, and printers. Electronic waste streams are growing rapidly related to the growing sales and shortening the life spans of electronic products. The elements of reverse logistics for electronic products are collection, grading and sorting, re-processing and re-distribution. The success of the reverse logistics is strongly related with the collection activity and the collection activity is strongly related with the location of collection centers. The main issues related to collection of e-waste are what is the collection method and where are the collection centers. When evaluating collection centers, many factors such as environmental and cost effectiveness must be evaluated. In this paper, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) decision model has been used to select an e-waste collection center location. The paper aims to provide a framework for analyzing various e-waste collection center locations. The illustration of the AHP model for selection of a e-waste collection center location has been shown with a case study. The alternatives for e-waste collection centers were evaluated and compared under factors. The solution process was illustrated according to the proposed AHP decision model for evaluating e-waste collection center locations.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
