Abstract. The Web Service Modeling Language (WSML) is a language for the specification of different aspects of Semantic Web Services. It provides a formal language for the Web Service Modeling Ontology WSMO which is based on well-known logical formalisms, specifying one coherent language framework for the semantic description of Web Services, starting from the intersection of Datalog and the Description Logic SHIQ. This core language is extended in the directions of Description Logics and Logic Programming in a principled manner with strict layering. WSML distinguishes between conceptual and logical modeling in order to support users who are not familiar with formal logic, while not restricting the expressive power of the language for the expert user. IRIs play a central role in WSML as identifiers. Furthermore, WSML defines XML and RDF serializations for inter-operation over the Semantic Web.
Abstract. The automatic location of services that fulfill a given need is a key step towards dynamic and scalable integration. In this paper we present a model for the automatic location of services that considers the static and dynamic aspects of service descriptions and identifies what notions and techniques are useful for the matching of both. Our model presents three important features: ease of use for the requester, efficient pre-filtering of relevant services, and accurate contracting of services that fulfill a given requester goal. We further elaborate previous work and results on Web service discovery by analyzing what steps and what kinds of descriptions are necessary for efficient and usable automatic service location. Furthermore, we analyze intuitive and formal notions of match that are of interest for locating services that fulfill a given goal. Although having a formal underpinning, the proposed model does not impose any restrictions on how to implement it for specific applications, but proposes some useful formalisms for providing such implementations.
Purpose-To present the state of the arts application of semantic web technologies in web portals and corresponding achievable improvements for identifying the potential improvement made by semantic web technology. Design/methodology/approach-An evaluation scheme is proposed to investigate various web portals that make use of semantic web technologies in order to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This scheme consists of three layers: information access, information processing and grounding technologies. Two academic portals and two commercial portals are selected based on the definition of semantic web portal. Detailed evaluation based on the proposed scheme is conducted on these four select portals. Findings-Semantic web technologies can definitely increase the information consistency and the information processing quality of web portals by using ontologies to model portal structure and consensus knowledge. Furthermore, semantic web services will be acting as the key technologies to lift current portals to next level. Originality/value-This paper proposes an elaborated evaluation method for investigating various portals. It reveals the current status of semantic web applications in web portals.
Abstract. Discovery is a central reasoning task in service-oriented architectures, concerned with detecting Web services that are usable for solving a given request. This paper presents two extensions in continuation of previous works towards goal-based Web service discovery with sophisticated semantic matchmaking. At first, we distinguish goal templates as generic objective descriptions and goal instances that denote concrete requests as an instantiation of a goal template. Secondly, we formally describe requested and provided functionalities on the level of state transitions that denote executions of Web services, respectively solutions for goals. Upon this, we specify a two-phase discovery procedure along with semantic matchmaking techniques that allow to accurately determine the usability of a Web service. The techniques are defined in the Abstract State Space model that supports several languages for describing Web services.
