The development and histology of the olfactory apparatus of the grayling (Thymallus arcticus) was studied from its anlage on day 8 through day 60 post-hatching, and also in its adult condition.A correlation exists between length of fish and the number of olfactory lamellae.A provisional interpretation is provided for the origin of the neurilemmal cells surrounding the unmyelinated olfactory fibers. The rhythmic movement of water through the olfactory apparatus coincides with that of external respiration.
