The Ecological Community Evaluation System (EEWH-EC) of Taiwan was proposed in 2009 and is focused on evaluating the entire community. It is a member of the EEWH family of green building assessment system. The purpose of this study is to introduce the EEWH-EC. The evaluation system includes five assessment categories: ecology, energy conservation and waste reduction, health and comfort, service function, and crime prevention. Communities can apply this system to assess themselves, determine their special characteristics, and use the outcome to implement improvements. The government can utilize the evaluation result to make policies for better and sustainable environments for citizens.
A constructed wetland-pond system consisting of two freewater-surface-flow (FWS) wetland cells, a scenic pond, and a slag filter in series was used for reclamation of septic tank effluent from a campus building. The results show that FWS wetlands effectively removed major pollutants under a hydraulic loading rate between 2.1 and 4.2 cm/d, with average efficiencies ranging from 74 to 78% for total suspended solids, 73 to 88% for 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, 42 to 49% for total nitrogen, 34 to 70% for total phosphorous, 64 to 79% for total coliforms, and 90 to 99.9% for Escherichia coli. After passing through the scenic pond and slag filter, the reclaimed water was used for landscape irrigation. There were a variety of ornamental plants and aquatic animals established in the second FWS cell and scenic pond with good water quality, thus enhancing landscape and ecology amenity in campuses. This study explored the ventilation conditions of community atriums for selected housing prototypes in Tainan City, Taiwan. Employing field surveys and CFD simulations, the atrium ventilation of the selected housing building layouts were studied and compared. Through the CFD simulation using the common wind direction in the autumn of the study region, this study found that among the four community building layouts selected, the atrium space of the double-side opening townhouse building layout has the best outdoor ventilation. In addition, the study also revealed that when the arrangement of the building layout and the openings of the atrium are coordinated with the local wind environment, the outdoor ventilation will be significantly improved. Finally, this paper provides suggestions for building layouts and the design of community open space in order to enhances the ventilation of community atrium and its user comfort.
