ABSTRACT:p-Vinylbenzyl alcohol, partially alkoxidated with potassium naphthalene, was used successfully to initiate living polymerization of ethylene oxide to afford α-p-vinylbenzyl-ω-hydroxy poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomers. The ω-hydroxy end-groups were quantitatively transformed to tertiary amines either by tosylation followed by reaction with potassium 2-dimethylaminoethoxide or by Williamson synthesis with 2-dimethylaminoethyl chloride in the presence of sodium hydride. ω-Quaternary ammonium-ended PEO macromonomers were also quantitatively obtained by reaction with iodomethane.KEY WORDS Poly(ethylene oxide)
