Aims
To investigate the risk factors for myopia, including near work and outdoor activity, in Singapore Chinese preschool children.
Methods
A cross-sectional study, with disproportionate random sampling by 6-month age groups, of 3009 Singapore Chinese children aged 6–72 months was performed. Information on family history, near work and outdoor activity was obtained. Spherical equivalent refraction (SEA) was assessed.
Results
Children with two myopic parents were more likely to be myopic (adjusted OR=1.91; 95% CI 1.38 to 2.63) and to have a more myopic SER (regression coefficient=−0.35; 95% CI −0.47 to −0.22) than children without myopic parents. For each 1 cm taller height, the SER was more myopic by 0.01 dioptres. Neither near work nor outdoor activity was associated with preschool myopia.
Conclusions
A family history of myopia was the strongest factor associated with preschool myopia. In contrast, neither near work nor outdoor activity was found to be associated with early myopia. These data suggest that genetic factors may play a more substantial role in the development of early-onset myopia than key environmental factors.
We studied theoretically the exciton coherent dynamics in the hybrid complex composed of CdTe quantum dot (QDs) and rodlike Au nanoparticles (NPs) by the self-consistent approach. Through adjusting the aspect ratio of the rodlike Au NPs, the radiative rate of the exciton and the nonradiative energy transfer rate from the QD to the Au NP are tunable in the wide range 0.05-4 ns(-1) and 4.4 x 10(-4) to 2.6 ns(-1), respectively; consequently, the period of Rabi oscillations of exciton population is tunable in the range 0.6 pi-9 pi.
Dihydroartemisinin, a more water-soluble metabolite of artemisinin derivatives, is a safe and most effective antimalarial analog of artemisinin. In the present study, we investigated the antiangiogenic activity of dihydroartemisinin in vitro and in vivo, and investigated dihydroartemisinin-induced apoptosis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Dihydroartemisinin markedly reduced VEGF binding to its receptors on the surface of HUVEC. The expression levels of two major VEGF receptors, Flt-1 and KDR/flk-1, on HUVEC were lower following dihydroartemisinin treatment as shown by an immunocytochemical staining assay. The in vivo antiangiogenic activity was evaluated in the model of chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) neovascularization. Dihydroartemisinin significantly inhibited CAM angiogenesis at low concentrations (5-30 nmol/100 microl per egg). We also investigated both qualitatively and quantitatively the induction of HUVEC apoptosis by dihydroartemisinin. A dose-related (5-80 microM) and time-dependent (6-36 h) increase in dihydroartemisinin-induced HUVEC apoptosis was observed by flow cytometry. Our results suggest that the antiangiogenic effect induced by dihydroartemisinin might occur by induction of cellular apoptosis and inhibition of expression of VEGF receptors. These findings and the known low toxicity of dihydroartemisinin indicate that it might be a promising candidate angiogenesis inhibitor.
