The diagnosis of periodontal diseases in dentistry is based primarily on conventional two-dimensional imaging methods. However, conventional imaging methods have disadvantages such as geometric distortion and anatomic masking resulting from the reduction of three-dimensional structures to two dimensions. These disadvantages have been eliminated by cone beam computed tomography, which are frequently used in current dentistry, allowing to obtain three-dimensional images. Cone beam computed tomography is a valuable imaging technique, particularly for the detection of intrabony defects, furcation involvement and buccal/lingual bone destruction. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of cone beam computed tomography compared to conventional methods in periodontal diseases.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
