Summary.In 28 patients with gastric cancer the correlation between pre-and postoperative staging according to UICC was examined by CT and by conventional diagnostic methods. CT identified the tumor in 85 % of cases. Local spread of tumor with infiltration only of the small or large omentum was not shown in any patient, while infiltration of adjacent organs was demonstrable in all patients. Regional adenopathy was shown in 39.2 % and liver metastases in 75 % of the cases. Preoperative staging according to the TNM classification was possible in only 25 % of the cases with CT.
