Some experimental studies are presented on the compensated mixture cholesteryl chloride + cholesteryl laurate (65:35 wt yo) to which the pleochroic dye xylenazo-P-naphtol is added in two ratios: 1 : 100 and 1 : 200 by weight. The colour electro-optic effect, the dynamic scattering, and the pulsing electrohydrodynamic instabilities are studied. The thermotropic mesomorphism of different fatty acids is illustrated by the thermodielectric effect and by micro structural observations. The fatty acids which are studied (arachidic, lauric and elaidic acids) have an initial space charge. The thermodielectric effect is due to charge separation and consists in the appearance of noticeable variations of electric current intensity as a function of the temperature at phase transitions.
