Acta physiol. scand. 1962. 54. 97-104. -The incorporation of 58Fe into nonhem iron and hemoglobin iron of circulating erythrocytes has been followed in rabbits. The experiments indicate that nonhem iron represents an intermediate step in the passage of iron from transferrin to hemoglobin. Nonhem iron is also present in the later stages of erythrocyte life, but in a metabolically inactive state. By electrophoresis three ironcontaining fractions have bern separated, one of which is radioactive. I t is suggested that this radioactive fraction represents a shortlived step in the iron transport system.
