The presence of an iron-containing complex (FSC, ferric sorbitol citrate) in medium inhibited proliferation of malignant (KB. GHC) cells: but did not appreciably alter the proliferation of normal (HBS, Vero) cells. Flow cytometric analysis showed considerable differences of malignant and normal cell growth kinetics. With addition of 200 μM Fe in FSC, malignant cell proliferation was suppressed. An increased number of cells in Gl and early S phase suggested that iron excess blocked the cell cycle before beginning of DNA synthesis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
