The continuous increase in the use of wood in many sectors and the growing concerns on the sustainability of the forest products has raised serious questions as to the sustainability of wood as a construction material for fishing vessels in Indonesia. Based on the current developments, Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) material is potentially the top alternative substitute to wood for building fishing vessels in Indonesia. However, the initiatives to introduce FRP, particularly by the Indonesian government, as alternative construction material still have many problems including that of acceptance by the fishers themselves. The result of the study shows that some aspects that need to be developed for implementing FRP as construction material in the future, including: fishers' knowledge and experiences regarding to FRP as construction material, the suitable design of the FRP fishing vessels for specific fishing communities and proper infrastructure to support the FRP boats industries.
Every fishing boat owned by fishermen in the Muncar Harbor area of Banyuwangi is always decorated. In addition to beautifying the ship, they also provide enthusiasm for work. Various decorations used include the shape of the dome of the mosque and the shape of a butterfly. Although technically all ornaments do not support their safety at sea. Accidents, namely the collision of traditional fishing vessels by large commercial vessels often occur. because the area of operation of traditional fishermen is the trajectory of large commercial ships. Many accidents occur because the presence of fishing boats is not detected by commercial vessels. because most traditional fishing boats are made of materials that do not reflect the radar signals of large vessels. For this reason, it is very necessary to install a reflector radar, which is a passive radar that serves to increase the object’s Radar Cross Section value. This radar can be mounted on fishing vessels so that the reflected energy from this radar reflector can be recognized by large ships. This article describes designs that are in demand by traditional fishermen in the Muncar area of Banyuwangi.
Beside of environmental conditions, ship characteristics also greatly affect in ship behavior when operating at sea, called seakeeping ability. The shape of the hull, appendages, damping, and the weight distribution of ship are some of the factors that determine how the ship motion response occurred. This paper examines how much the pitch motion is influenced in high-speed craft due to the changing of the gyration radius. By using the strip theory method, and by taking the irregular head sea condition and a wave height of 4 meters, then the ship speed and the wave period are varied to determine the pitch motion amplitude at 3 values of gyration radius: 0.2, 0.25 and 0.3 of the ship's length. The results of the study show that at higher ship speeds, the gyration radii greatly influence the pitch amplitude. As for changes in the wave period, the influence is significant at value of 5 second. From these two results, it is clear that the ship's gyration radii must be determined precisely to be able to predict an accurate pitch motion response on a high-speed craft.
