The main factors influencing the overhaul period of induction magnetic pumps are examined and analyzed. It is established on the basis of an analysis of the special features of the manufacturing and operation of the pumps that their operability is determined mainly by the reliability of the windings. The main damaging factors acting on the winding are noted. Expressions for calculating the failure rate of the channel and the turn and casing insulation are obtained. The following conclusions concerning the life expectancy are drawn on the basis of a comparison of the computed and operational performance indicators: the procedure developed is suitable for practical calculations of electromagnetic pumps and the life expectancy characteristics are comparable to and the predicted values are higher than for mechanical pumps.Ever since they first appeared, electromagnetic pumps were regarded as promising devices for pumping liquid-metal coolant in the loops of a nuclear power plant with a fast reactor and its attendant experimental and technological systems. The simplicity of control and the absence of seals and moving parts are obvious advantages over mechanical pumps from the standpoint of reliability and safety. However, the lack of experimental life-expectancy data made it impossible for a long time to obtain numerical values of the reliability indicators and to make comparisons between experimental data and computational estimates and thereby confirm the advantages.Experience in operating electromagnetic induction pumps in various fast-reactor systems and in technological and experimental facilities has now been accumulated at the D. V. Efremov Research Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus. This experience makes it possible to estimate the reliability indicators from the results of operating the pumps and to compare these estimates with computational estimates.Any electromagnetic pump consists of an inductor and a channel. The pumps have cylindrical, spiral, and flat channels. The inductors in the latter two types of pumps in general are analogs of the stators in conventional and linear asynchronous electric motors, respectively. The inductor in a cylindrical pump is a three-phase system of disk-shaped coils placed inside packets of a magnetic circuit [1].The objectives of the present paper are to estimate and compare the computed and operational reliability indicators for individual components of the pump-channel system and the inductor and then to assess the reliability of the entire device.
