The hemiparasitic endemic genus Socratina Balle (Loranthaceae) is revised for Madagascar. Three species are recognized, including a new one, Socratina phillipsoniana Callm. & Luino. The vegetative and floral morphology of the new species is distinctive; in particular the conspicuous longitudinal villous fringe of long dendritic trichomes on the outer surface of its corolla along each suture of the lobes that contrasts with the shorter floccose indument that covers the rest of the outer corolla surface. All three known species are provided with preliminary risk assessments based on the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. A key to the genus is presented and a discussion of the morphological affinities of each species is also provided.
A new species of Pandanus Parkinson (Pandanaceae) endemic to Madagascar is described as Pandanus kalobinonensis Callm., Razakamal. & Luino and illustrations are provided. The new species is restricted to the north-western lowland moist evergreen forests of the Kalobinono massif. Pandanus kalobinonensis can easily be morphologically distinguished from other members of the genus by its small solitary globose syncarp borne on a short peduncle, monocarpellate drupes, and single spiniform stigma with an adaxial stigmatic groove. Despite the occurrence of both collections within limits of the newly designated Galoko-Kalobonino Protected Area, the new species is preliminary assessed as "Endangered" [EN] using the IUCN Red List Criteria.
Pararistolochia Hutc. & Dalziel (Aristolochiaceae) is a genus that comprised about 35 species known until present from continental Africa and Australasia. Two recent inventories carried in the limestone massif of Beanka in western Madagascar have led to the detection of a new species that we describe here as Pararistolochia enricoi Luino, L. Gaut. & Callm. This impressive liana is until today the only malagasy representative of the genus. The deciduous habit, together with the two-lobed perianth and the presence of trichomes covering most parts of the plant are exclusive characters that clearly distinguish Pararistolochia enricoi within the genus. The new species is provided with a preliminary risk assessment of its conservation status based on the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.
