Following a review of the literature on the impact of microfinance from the sustainability perspective, through the interrelation of economic, environmental, social and governance dimensions (ESG), and an analysis of its performance in promoting financial inclusion and poverty eradication, we present a comprehensive and inclusive assessment of microfinance institutions that allows obtaining a better understanding of the current status of these institutions. The results detect aspects as over-indebtedness, environmental impact of funding or poverty reduction target as issues that need to be reviewed to ensure the sustainability of these institutions and enable proper management of funding programs in all its dimensions.
