A low-dimensional material with the composition {(n-C 16 H 33 )(CH 3 ) 2 S} ? +1 [CdCl 3 ] -has been prepared. As expected, the sulfonium cations form an insulating organic layer; the closest Cd-Cd distance between layers is about 19 Å , as compared to 3.9 Å within the same layer. The inorganic layer is formed by a 5-coordinated cadmium(II) moiety CdCl 5 , connected to a one-dimensional chain of slightly distorted, edge-sharing square pyramids. The compound was synthesized from the parent sulfonium chloride and CdCl 2 in ethanol, exploiting the Lewis acidity of Cd(II).
Two new materials of the composition ({CH3(CH2)15(CH3)2S}+)2[CoBr4]2– (1) and ({CH3(CH2)15(CH3)2S}+)2[CuBr4]2– (2 and 3), of which the latter exists in two polymorphs, were synthesized. The materials display the synthetically targeted structures, comprising of layers of complex metal ions and layers of long‐chain sulfonium cations. The crystal structures of the materials were determined. The interlayer distances are around 24 Å, with metal–metal distances about 8 Å. The magnetic properties of 1 were investigated, and the material is paramagnetic. ({CH3(CH2)15(CH3)2S}+)2[CuBr4]2 is polymorphic. Both polymorphs crystallize with triclinic symmetry.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
