The paper discusses different strategies for the disposal of wastewater sludge, particularly the "use on land" strategy and the "productification" strategy. In the "use on land" strategy the new regulations in Europe call for stabilization as well as disinfection of sludge to be used on land. The paper discusses the design and operation experiences with stabilization/disinfection methods in Norway where such treatment has been compulsory since 1995. In the "productification" strategy it is differentiated between the production of "bio-soils" and production of specific products (energy, nutrients, coagulants etc) and the "marketability" of these products is evaluated. An example of a sludge treatment concept aimed at recycling--the KREPRO process--is presented.
A full-scale sludge recovery pilot plant has been in operation since autumn 1995 at Helsingborg WWTP in Sweden, a facility which treats wastewater from 150,000 p.e. The pilot plant, with a maximum capacity of 500 kg TS/hour, is now redesigned and automated for continuous operation. In this paper the process, operational experiences as well as difficulties and utilisation of the products, will be presented.
A web-based platform for the simulation-optimization of industrial problems.
Computers & industrial engineering, 64(4):
AbstractThis study presents a platform for industrial, real-world simulation-optimization based on web techniques. The design of the platform is intended to be generic and flexible and thereby make it possible to apply the platform in various problem domains. In the implementation of the platform, modern web techniques, such as Ajax, JavaScript, GWT, and ProtoBuf, are used. The platform is tested and evaluated on a real industrial problem of production optimization at Volvo Aero Corporation, a company that develops and manufactures high-technology components for aircraft and gas turbine engines. The results of the evaluation show that while the platform has several benefits, implementing a web-based system is not completely straightforward. At the end of the paper, possible pitfalls are discussed and some recommendations for future implementations are outlined.
Chemically coagulated sewage water gives an effluent low in both suspended matter and organics. To use chemical precipitation as the first step in waste water treatment improves nitrification in the following biological stage. The precipitated sludge contains 75% of the organic matter in the sewage and can by hydrolysis be converted to readily degradable organic matter, which presents a valuable carbon source for the denitrification process. This paper will review experiences from full-scale applications as well as pilot-plant and laboratory studies.
