The authors’ purpose was to examine the factors associated with penalty outcomes of male elite goalball. A total of 122 video-recorded matches from two Paralympic Games (i.e., 2012 and 2016) and the 2014 Goalball World Championship were assessed using notational analysis. Individual (n = 2), situational (n = 4), and performance variables (n = 7) were analyzed with good strength of agreement for intra- and interrater kappa index values. Their results showed that penalties play a very important role in the final score, composing around 25% of total goals in elite goalball matches. Winners were awarded on average with 62% of penalties and had 66% effectiveness compared with losers (31% and 53%) or drawers (8% and 52%). Based on the authors’ findings, penalty takers should direct their throws at specific target sectors on the court, which could increase their rate of success to over 80%.
When it is necessary to evaluate dental structures, the typical method is to obtain intraoral or panoramic X-rays at specialized dental clinics. However, in the daily practice of head and neck radiology, or even general radiology, it is common to encounter clinical situations or examination findings related to dental problems that should not be ignored. Because such problems can often be responsible for the clinical complaints of patients, this review aims to assist radiologists in identifying and describing common dental conditions on computed tomography of paranasal sinuses, face, and neck. It is important for radiologists to have knowledge of dental arch anatomy and its relationships with facial structures, as well as of major dental pathologies, including periapical sclerotic lesions, odontogenic cysts, fistulas, and abscesses, together with knowledge of incidental findings without clinical repercussions, which should be easily identified and stressed by the radiologist when necessary. The imaging methods most commonly used in evaluation of paranasal sinuses and face are computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Those methods allow radiologists to recognize and become familiar with the main dental findings. The description of such findings by a radiologist can lead to a change in treatment strategy.
Diabetes mellitus is among the chronic diseases considered emergencies. Products obtained from medicinal plants have been used for thousands of years by the population in the treatment of various diseases. The objective of this work was to evaluate the possible effects of inputs obtained from the artichoke (Cynara scolumus L.) on biochemical markers in diabetic rats. The dry extract was obtained by hydroethanolic (70% v / v) maceration. Male Wistar rats were treated with alloxan (150 mg / kg of mass dissolved in 0.9% saline) intraperitoneally. The extract (0.2g extract / kg) was given in normal and diabetic rats for 30 days. Animals from the Control and Diabetes groups received only water. Biochemical markers were determined in the serum by enzymatic colorimetric method. The chemical characterization was performed quantifying the total polyphenol content (Folin-Ciocalteau) and quantification of the total flavonoid in dry extract (1 mg / mL), by the complexation method with aluminum chloride. The evaluation of fasting blood glucose was positive, when considered that the glycemic levels from "diabetic group" was partially higher when compared with "water group", "extract group" and "diabetic extract group". The treatment with extract for the diabetic animals also prevented significantly the serum levels of fructosamine and presented serum levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides significantly lower than non-treated animals. However, the treatment with artichoke extract was able to control glycemic levels at short and medium term, showing an improvement in lipid profile.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
