Serum CRP levels in the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis were investigated by lateks agglutination method in 100 newborns. CRP was positive in 10 cases aut of the 12 septic newborns. ln this study, the specificity of CRP was found 97% and the sensitivity was found 66%. it is concluded that serum CRP is valuable criteriafor early sepsis diagnosis.
Sixty patients who had been referred to our out patient clinic with the complaint of short stature and whose heights were found to be below 2 Standart Deviation Scores (SDS) of agerelated values were investigated to evaluate the effect of recombinant hGH treatment. Twenty-three (38.3 %) had hasal levels of Growth Hormone (GH) and bone age retardation along with heights 2 SDS below normal .. Insulin-induced hypoglycemia and L-OOPA stimulation tests were applied to these cases. Seven cases (30.49 %) gave a complete response to these tests, while 3 cases (13.04 %) gave partial response and 13 cases (56.52 %) gave no response at all.
Seven of the 13 patients with isolated GH deficiency were given recombinant GH 12 IU/m2 /week, subcutaneously, 6 days a week. These patients have not completed the treatment course. Reevaluation at the end of one year's therapy revealed a statistically significant difference in their growth velocities (p<0.05). We conclude that exogenous recombinant hGH is effective in the treatment of short stature due to isolated GH deficiency, and even betler responses can be achieved as the patients are recognized and treated earlier.
Bartter's Syndrome is characterized by the impairment of chloride reabsorbtion in the distal tubules of the kidney. As a result, the kidney loses chloride and persistent hypokalemia, hypochloremia and metabolic alkalosis ensue. Most cases come to the attention of the pediatrican for the early failure to thrive observed in childhood. Its mode of inheritance is thought to be autosomal dominant. in the 1. 5 month old male infant, who admitted to our clinic with the complaints of failure to suck and gain weight, we detected an increase in renal excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride. Plasma renin activity and plasma aldosteron levels were also high. With these results we diagnosed the case as Bartter's Syndrome. We treated the patient with oral potassium and rectal indomethacin. With this therapy, the patient's clinical status and laboratory results improved.
We planned to find out if there is a correlation between the socioeconomic status of the families and their children 's hemoglobin levels. This works was carried out among children in high socioeconomic level families. 78 cases (ages between 3 and 6 years) were investigated. Their average hemoglobin levels were 13.1 ± 1.5 gr/dl. it was seen that there was a close relationship between the socioeconomic status of the family and their hemoglobin levels. in the anemic forms, the most important etiologic factor was found iron deficiency anemia ( 80% ).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
