The main thrust of this work was to develop a high efficiency N-way combining scheme consistent with the physical geometries associated with X and Ku band active apertures. A 12-way combiner utilizing stripline serial feed networks in Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic (LTCC) was designed, fabricated and tested over an 8-14 GHz bandwidth. This combiner was integrated with 6 dual power with greater than 86% combining efficiency at center band. The results of this work are described within this paper.is extremely disadvantageous because the resulting aspect ratio of the surface area deviates drastically from that required for a "behind the element" location. A low cost X-Band solid state transmitter has been successfully demonstrated for low volume commercial applications. Advanced modeling techniques, novel circuit design, concurrent specification flowdown and automated processing technologies were utilized to develop a robust design which maximized yield and achieved the low cost goals required for solid state transmitter amplification in low volume commercial applications.weather radar functions and basic ground map. The MODAR-4000 system included these functions in addition to high resolution ground map with precision update capability, airborne target detection and beacon detection. All of the systems included a highly reliable solid state transmitter. Since the production quantities were low and the cost goals aggressive, Westinghouse designers had to be innovative in the design approach in order to be successful in the new business area.
IntroductionAdvantages of using solid state amplification for airborne applications are well documented. Smaller size, lighter weight and lower phase noise are a few advantages over the traditional TWT. f:ET based MMIC power amplifiers also have a well demonstrated reliability record, but to achieve commercial viability the system must also achieve the low cost tat pets. In particular, low volume comn~ercial applications impose even tougher targets since economic\ of scale are riot achievable. This requires a robiist design with high yields that utilizes advanced modeling techniques and concurrent engineering as well as automated manufacturing and test met hodologies.
