Article describes the casting of polyurethane rubbers and difficulties in determining Young's Modulus of such a soft rubbery material. Suitable testing procedures are recommended for the wide range of moduli from 16 to 700 lbf/in2 obtainable with different mixes of this material, their fringe‐stress sensitivities are measured and favourable technical applications are pointed out.
The preparation of a liquid rubber formulation for both cold and hot casting of photoelastic models is explained. Membranes and thin-walled structural models are amongst the examples considered qualitatively. Suggestions are made for the development of approximate but rapid methods of analysis. Of necessity the applications outlined are based on brief trials only and further development work is required.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
