Obesity is one of the most common medical problems and a risk for illnesses such as hypert e n s i o n , diabetes, degenerative arthritis and card i o v a s c u l a r events. It is a cause of significant morbidity and m o rtality and generates great social and financial costs. Moro v e r, childhood obesity precede a gre a t number of metabolic complications in adulthood. The treatment, above all, in the metabolic syndro m e , should be weight reduction. Recent weight loss treatment recommendations have focused on helping patients lose 5-10% of their body weight and maintaining these losses for longer durations. Choosing the c o rrect treatment is very important to it. We re v i e w the new weight loss recommendations and pro v i d e suggestions for assessing patients for weight loss t reatment. We also discuss new treatment options and focus on their applications in a Primary Health Care setting.
