The inner zones of the Dinaric Alps are particularly well expressed in the Hellenides. Following a description of the specific features of the different zones, beginning with the Macedonian sector where they are best known or most complete, their active role in orogenic mechanisms is discussed. A review of the whole Mediterranean sector of the Alpine system, from Arabia to the western Alps, shows the importance of longitudinal movements in the genesis of the system.
