This paper discusses the design and installation of five 230-kV submarine, high-pressure, oil-filled, pipe-type cables across Baltimore Harbor for a distance of 2 mi in a common trench with a 72-in water main and a 24-in gas line. This work was concurrent with the construction of an adjacent highway bridge. The cables are designed to operate in pairs with an emergency capability of 910 MVA. The fifth cable is a spare. Pipe-type cable was selected over self-contained on the basis of lower quoted installed costs. The installation includes a temperature monitoring system with unique features.
