A b s t r a c t -This paper presents results of laboratory tests of a power conversion system (PCS) f o r superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). The PCS uses a two-quadrant chopper and a v o l t a g e source converter. Operating modes of the c h o p p e r are discussed. Operation of the SMES to p r o v i d e independent control of real and reactive p o w e r , operation as a static var compensator, low frequency modulation of the real power, and speed of r e s p o n s e are demonstrated. A circuit is presented for testing a SMES PCS that does not require a superconducting c o i l .
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
