JANNES MARK US MABESOONE',' e MARGARETH MASCARENHAS ALHEIROS' ABSTR ACT ORIGIN OF T HE COAST AL SE DIMENTARY BASI N OF PERNAMB UC0 4PARAfBA. The Pemambuco-Parafba sedi mentary coasta l basin is one of the less well known At lantic mar ginal basins of Brazil. Due to the fact that exactly in this area the southern and eq uatorial Atlantic oceans at their opening did meet, its geo log ical history is qu ite par ticular. Recent studies of revi sion of mapping and reinterpretation of data already published , includin g from adjacent areas, provi ded the following results: the Pernambuco-Parafba Basin is form ed by the subbasins Cabo, O linda , Alhand ra, and the southern part of Cang uaretama, separated by struc tural lines, belon ging to the suite of So uth Atla ntic basins, after their lithi c fill. Th e subbasins Natal and northern part of Cang uare tama belong still to the Potiguar Basin. One of the last links between Brazil and Africa seems to have been the no rthern part ofthe so-called Transversa l Zo ne, between Recife and Joac Pessoa, co nstituti ng a sill until the end of the Cretaceous; this sill was tilted toward s the south and broke at abo ut the Joao Pessoa-Maman gu ape regio n. The faunal exchange betwee n the So uth and Equatorial Atla ntic, before Maastric tian , took place o nly du ring transgress ion phases; during reg ressio n phases the sill turned probab ly a landbridge which permitted the exc hange of terrestria l flora and faun a between the two co ntinents.
