The paramagnetic correction to the g-factor of the 6 3P 0 level of odd isotopes of mercury has been computed. The values of 199g(6 3P 0) and 201g(6 3P0) have been calculated only with an accuracy of the order of one percent, because of uncertainties in the hyperfine coupling theory for the 6s 6p configuration of mercury. On the other hand, the ratio 201 g(6 3 P0)/199g(6 3P0) has been predicted with much higher accuracy to be - 0.369 414(16). From optical pumping of the 6 3P 0 level in mercury vapour, in presence of a few torr of nitrogen, the experimental values of the same parameters have been determined : 199 g(6 3P0)=- 0.950 4(4) x 10-3 ; 201g(6 3P0) = 0.35108(7) x 10 -3; 201g(6 3P0)/199 g(6 3P0)=- 0.369 41(8), significantly improving previous experimental results obtained by one of us. The new observed values are in perfect agreement both with the previous ones and with the theoretical predictions
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
