Several recent studies have suggested that allergic rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, and asthma may be manifestations of a common underlying pathology, but there are many unanswered questions. More studies are needed to better define all the underlying pathologic mechanisms as well as treatments to optimize outcomes for patients with allergic rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, and asthma.
Dried bone samples obtained from the 4th lumbar vertebrae in 14 uraemic patients and 9 controls were analysed for calcium, magnesium and phosphate content. It was found that there was a statistically significant increase in magnesium content of bone in uraemic subjects, a mean magnesium content of 3.3 mg/g of dried bone being found in renal failure compared with 2.6 mg/g in control subjects. There was also a statistically significant increase in calcium/g of dried bone in uraemics. It is pointed out that because there is an increase in the total amount of calcium in the vertebral bone in renal failure, there is an even greater increase in magnesium in bone in uraemics. The implications of this are discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
