Highlights
Seawater cultivation of marine microalgae for nutraceutical production is hampered by the presence of salt.
Dilute hydrochloric acid (0.5 %) pre-wash developed as effective salt removal approach to augment total carotenoid and lutein content (1.8 fold).
Salt removal treatments also impacted the fatty acid profile and degree of saturation.
Impact of salt removal treatment was visualized using SEM.
