The test techniques that have been used to assess the corrosion behavior of aluminum powder metallurgy (PM) alloys are described. Standard ASTM tests have been used to measure general and pitting corrosion, exfoliation corrosion, and stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibilities of these alloys. However, the drive to measure subtle but important improvements in SCC behavior at higher strength levels and the desire to understand the complex SCC mechanisms in aluminum PM alloys have led to the use of extremely innovative test techniques. These techniques—the slow strain rate, loading mode, breaking load, bolt-loaded double cantilever beam, and shadow-optical-caustic tests—are described. Examples are presented comparing the susceptibilities of PM alloys to the various types of corrosion with the susceptibilities of conventional ingot alloys.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
