Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) results from the irreversible, nonenzymatic, insulin-independent binding of glucose to the beta-globin chain of hemoglobin. 1 The measurement of HbA1c is an accepted index to monitor and diagnose diabetes mellitus (DM) in cats and differentiate stress hyperglycemia from DM. 2-7 Glycated hemoglobin represents the glycemic status during an RBC lifespan. In contrast, serum fructosamine concentrations exceed the RI after 3-5 days of marked hyperglycemia or after 7 days of moderate hyperglycemia. 8
