BackgroundDermatological diseases, among which acne vulgaris, have psychological impact on the affected generating feelings of guilt, shame and social isolation.ObjectivesTo compare quality of life, self-esteem and other psychosocial variables amongst adolescents with and without acne vulgaris, and between levels of severity.MethodsCross-sectional observational study in a sample of 355 high school students from the city of João Pessoa. Data collection was performed with questionnaires and clinical-dermatological evaluation. The primary variables were the incidence of AV; quality of life, set by the Children's Dermatology Quality of Life Index and Dermatology Quality of Life Index; and self-esteem, measured by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. For calculation of statistical tests, we used the SPSS 20.0 software, considering p=0.05.ResultsThe sample, with an average age of 16, showed 89.3% prevalence of acne vulgaris. The most prevalent psychosocial issue was "afraid that acne will never cease", present in 58% of affected youth. The median score of Quality of Life in Children's Dermatology Index was different amongst students with and without acne vulgaris (p=0.003), as well as the Quality of Life in Dermatology (p=0.038) scores, so that students with acne vulgaris have worse QoL. There was a correlation between the severity of acne vulgaris and worse quality of life. Self-esteem was not significantly associated with the occurrence or severity of acne vulgaris.Conclusionsacne vulgaris assumes significance in view of its high prevalence and the effect on quality of life of adolescents, more severe at the more pronounced stages of disease (p<0.001). The psychosocial impact of acne vulgaris should be valued in the management of patients with this condition.
BACKGROUND Based on personal observations of dermatologists, nutritionists and patients, a new problem emerges in the gyms: development and exacerbation of acne in users of whey protein, which is a protein derived from cow's milk. Whey Protein extract contains growth factors that may be related to acne. Its purity and composition are not fully known and there is no scientific research on its potential to cause acne. OBJECTIVES Assess the relationship between the use of proteincalorie supplements and onset or exacerbation of acne vulgaris in young adults in the city of João Pessoa. METHODS Descriptive observational study conducted in gyms and in a dermatology clinic. Each participant was examined for acne on three occasions and followed for 60 days. RESULTS 30 patients were examined. Onset or exacerbation of acneiform lesions were observed (p <0.0005). The effect was more prominent in females and in individuals without current acne and no family history of acne. CONCLUSION This study showed the onset of acne with the progressive use of protein-calorie supplementation, in a two-month period. It is suggested that this type of supplementation be discouraged.
Touraine-Solente-Gole syndrome or pachydermoperiostosis is a rare genodermatosis, affecting skin, bones and connective tissue, characterized by the triad of pachydermia, periostosis and digital clubbing. The authors report the case of a 26-year-old man presenting the dermato-rheumatic symptoms that characterize the complete form of the syndrome. He also manifested palpebral ptosis and severe acne treated with isotretinoin, in addition to exuberant polyarticular arthritis. Other causes of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy were investigated and not found. What's already known about this topic? i. Pachydermoperiostosis is a rare genodermatosis involving dermatologic (pachydermia) and rheumatologic alterations (periostosis and digital clubbing). ii. The condition affects more males than females, with the onset generally occurring towards the end of adolescence. iii. There is no specific treatment. What does this study add? iv. A rare severe case of pachydermoperiostosis with glandular hypertrophy (severe acne and blepharoptosis). v. Nodulocystic acne was successfully treated with isotretinoin. vi. A voluminous effusion was present in the knee joints with acute patellar dislocation.
The diagnosis is based on a typical cutaneous condition associated with the presence of focal infiltrate composed of mast cells in the dermis in cutaneous biopsy, after exclusion of criteria that establish AbstractThe mastocytosis is characterized by local or systemic accumulation of mast cells of unknown etiologic, for which is included in groups of infrequent desease. It generally appears in the childhood or in adults between the third and fourth decade of life and it may lead to different clinical pictures. The case of a six month-old female is presented with lesion cutaneous and histopathological characteristics from this illness.
