Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) has been identified as a major etiologic agent of human dental caries and forms a significant proportion of oral streptococci in carious lesions. This study investigates the correlation of surface properties (effect of contact angle [CA] and free surface energy) on three restorative materials (zirconia, nickel–chromium–molybdenum alloy and composites) used in dental prosthetics with bacterial adhesion to S. mutans. Ten samples of each material (zirconia, nickel–chromium–molybdenum alloy and composites) of 8 mm diameter and 2.5 mm thickness were used. Aqueous CA measurements, free surface energy and bacterial adhesion to the sample surfaces were performed. Bacterial adhesion is determined by planting samples in the blood agar cultures and using an electron microscope (scanning electron microscopy [SEM]). The highest values of bacterial adhesion are found in composites, followed by the metal alloy, while the lowest values are observed in zirconia. Measurements show that zirconia has 17 bacteria; Ni–Cr–Mo alloy has 65, while the composite has 80 bacteria. The composites showed the highest degree of bacterial adhesion, compared to the other investigated materials, which correlates with the free surface energy of the samples (24.31 mJ/m2 for zirconia, 31.78 mJ/m2 for Ni–Cr–Mo alloy and 48.82 mJ/m2 for the composite).
Introduction. The prosthetic treatment of patients with cleft palate includes various treatment options such as fixed partial dentures, removable partial prosthesis, etc. The type of prosthetic appliance is determined by the oral health of each individual and the circumstances. We presented three adult patients with the cleft lip and palate subjected to prosthetic treatment. Case report. From the possible prosthetic solutions according to the conditions in the oral cavity and the circumstances, fixed partial dentures veneered with composite or ceramic were chosen. A proper relationship between the teeth was reached with the fixed partial dentures, and function established, the phonetics improved and satisfying aesthetics effect accomplished improving the profile appearance of the patient's face. Plastic surgery of the nose was performed after that. Conclusion. Multidisclipinary treatment is necessary for favourable long-term outcome in cleft lip and palate patients.Uvod. Protetsko lečenje pacijenata sa rascepom nepca uključuje različite opcije kao što su fiksne parcijalne proteze, parcijalne pokretne proteze i tako dalje. Tip protetskog aparata zavisi od oralnog zdravlja svake osobe pojedinačno, kao i od okolnosti. Prikazana su tri odrasla pacijenta sa heilognatopalatoshizom koji su zbrinuti protetski. Prikaz bolesnika. Od mogućih protetskih rešenja, u zavisnosti od uslova u usnoj duplji, izabrano je da se urade mostovne konstrukcije, fasetirane sa kompozitom ili keramikom. Sa mostovnom konstrukcijom uspostavljeni su međusobni odnosi zuba, postignuta je pravilna funkcija, poboljašala se fonetika, omogućena je zadovoljavajuća estetika i postignut je zadovoljavajući profilni izgled lica pacijenata. Usledila je plastična operacija nosa. Zaključak. Za povoljan dugoročni ishod lečenja bolesnika sa rascepom nepca i usne neophodan je multidisciplinarni pristup.
The accuracy of internal fit and marginal precision plays important role of clinical quality and success of dental crowns. Complications caused by marginal discrepancies such as caries, gingivitis, hypersensitivity are highlighted in dental literature. Despite marginal fit, internal fit and precision have a significant role in the persistence of full ceramic and metal ceramic crowns. As the technology evolves, it’s questionable which impression and manufacturing method is giving most accurate dental crowns. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to get some information and data about marginal and internal fitting of dental crowns made by conventional, two-phase impression technique with polyvinyl siloxanes, and using different manufacturing process.
