Early loss of primary teeth is quite common when associated with caries and accidental traumas. The anterior teeth are the most affected when we talk about trauma, but the posterior teeth are also concerned by the high prevalence of the carie disease that can lead to early extraction of the posterior deciduous teeth. The non-correct eruption of permanent teeth becomes worrying when we talk about occlusion, changes in speech and chewing, thus, it is noted the importance of pediatric treatment through preventive orthodontics with space maintainers when such a condition of early loss is installed. In this work, a literature review was carried out from the year 2010 to 2020 to classify the importance regarding the use of space maintainers. The articles found pointed out that the indication of space maintenance devices is extremely important after premature loss of primary teeth or trauma, thus avoiding changes in occlusion and preventing parafunctional habits, having the function of preserving the space so that the permanent successor can break out properly in the dental arch. It is concluded that when correctly indicated and in a timely manner, the space maintainers bring comfort and functionality to the patient.
