The stable carbon isotope ratio of submerged freshwater macrophytes is substantially higher than that of terrestrial C3 plants. This difference is consistent with the high diffusion resistance to inorganic carbon flux in the aquatic medium but also appears to be a function of the more negative carbon ratio of the dissolved inorganic carbon available to freshwater plants.
