Shoplifting is a persistent problem for the owner of the retail store, yet very little research has been done on the offence and on the backgrounds of the offenders. The authors of this paper studied the records of a group of shoplifters in a city store. Teenage shoplifters accounted for more than half of the offenders, while the typical adult shoplifter tended to be a married woman from a middle-class suburb.
