Hellich and Josef MánesThis study deals with one of the key subject of the iconography of Christian art, as treated in the same early 19th century by members of the Nazarene Brotherhood, and around the middle of the same century by two leading painters in Bohemia. The author refers to the period reflection of the history of the treatment of this subject. He examines the aspect of the above-listed artists' self-presentation in tackling the subject, in contexts ranging from the personal to the public.
