Fifty-five cases of suicide by doctors under the age of 40 were studied because of concern about deaths among anaesthetists in training. The excess mortality of doctors from suicide was confirmed, suggesting that risk factors associated with being a member of the medical profession continue to operate, although mortality for young male doctors from accidental poisoning is falling. Analysis of the branches of medicine in which the doctors were working showed no definite specialty predominance. There was a somewhat greater risk for women doctors born overseas.
The Co-ordinating Committee on the Implementation of the Report on the Remedial Professions have recently been considering the relationship between the remedial and medical professions. They had heard that Dr. D. R. L. Newton who was at that time President of the British Association for Rheumatology and Rehabilitation, had views on this relationship which would, they felt, make a constructive contribution to discussion. They, therefore, requested the D.H.S.S. to ask Dr. Newton if he would be willing to set out his views. He did this and has agreed that the following letter could be made available to members of the remedial professions.
