Originally conceived for use by U.S. military and intelligence communities, the LandScan web application and population datasets, produced by East View Geospatial with data from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, are useful for various reasons including: spatial data analysis, humanitarian aid and relief, disease modeling, market growth, and sustainable development/environmental protection. Older datasets, back to 2000, are archived as new versions are made available. There are three main audiences of LandScan: researchers who download and use the datasets; researchers who use the WMS and WCS services; and those who use the web platform. This review focuses mainly on the web app.Search functionalities include the ability to drill down to the pixel level, i.e., one square kilometer grid units; to quickly get population counts for an area on the world map by pointing and clicking; and to get population counts for an area using the polygon drawing function.
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to examine Providence College's experience in organizing, creating, and implementing the library's collection management system. Design/methodology/approach -The paper discusses the need for and the development of a collection management system to help make decisions regarding the cancellation and retention of periodical titles. Findings -The collection management system provided the librarians with information required to integrate the periodicals collection. It allows the academic departments to manage the periodical titles in their respective areas and to make decisions about which periodical titles they would like the library to subscribe or to cancel. It allows the library to inventory the collection. Originality/value -The paper provides insight into the integration of a collection management system and would be useful to those involved in that field who are looking to follow suit.
Concluding remarksWith the convenience and time-saving functions of Leganto reading lists, one will wonder if we are nurturing passive students and depriving them of information literacy. However, many teachers indicated they can help the student develop correct citation habits and become familiar with the library. Through the use of the Leganto reading list, the teacher-researcher can share their knowledge on how to locate reading materials and how to manage and organize an ever-increasing list of readings. On the other hand, the student can appreciate the boundless frontier of learning and visit exciting research topics that a course can never have time to explore. The collections that comprise Twentieth-Century Global Perspectives, covering 1941-1996, include primary sources from the Central Intelligence Agency's Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Daily Reports, 1941-1996 and its Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS) Reports, 1957-1995. The online versions of these sources are not consolidated anywhere else, making these collections invaluable for researchers in the various disciplines covered. Weaknesses of the database include the inability to search across all collections simultaneously, the absence of help screens, and the inability to export to bibliographic management tools such as RefWorks or Zotero. Pricing Options This is a very expensive product. I was not able to obtain general pricing information. For my institution (liberal arts college granting undergraduate and graduate degrees with approx. 4,500 FTE students
