Editor's note: This review of rheumatology nursing is the third in our year-long series of editorials reviewing the history of the Arthritis Health Professions Association.This article traces the evolution and historical background of rheumatology nursing through the contribution of those who were a part of the process. The role and functions of the rheumatology nurse are revealed in the literature and the activities in which rheumatology nurses have been involved. Rheumatology nursing as a specialty in itself or as a subspecialty of rehabilitation, orthopedic, or medicallsurgical nursing is described.
