We present a new approach to the logical design of relational databases, based on strategic port graph rewriting. We show how to model relational schemata as attributed port graphs and provide port graph rewriting rules to perform computations on functional dependencies. Using these rules we present a strategic graph program to find the transitive closure of a set of functional dependencies. This program is sound, complete and terminating, assuming that there are no cyclical dependencies in the schema.
We present new algorithms to compute the Syntactic Closure and the Minimal Cover of a set of functional dependencies, using strategic port graph rewriting. We specify a Visual Domain Specific Language to model relational database schemata as port graphs, and provide an extension to port graph rewriting rules. Using these rules we implement strategies to compute a syntactic closure, analyse it and find minimal covers, essential for schema normalisation. The graph program provides a visual description of the computation steps coupled with analysis features not available in other approaches. We prove soundness and completeness of the computed closure. This methodology is implemented in PORGY.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
