Lettuce is cultivated as minor crop in Nepal. However, people are becoming more health conscious in these days and demand for salad is increasing in food. The demand of lettuce is also gradually increasing but relatively few farmers are involved in this crop due to the lack of high-yielding and good quality genotypes. The research was conducted at two locations of Nepal; Kavre and Kaski with the aim of evaluating the performance of seven different hybrid lettuce genotypes in terms of its morphology, yield, and quality. The research was laid out on Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications at each location. Two types of lettuce were used on the research i.e. head type and leaf type. Among the head type, genotype Iceberg performed better with more plant spread (51 cm), head diameter (14.7 cm) and yield (738.4 g at Kavre and 725.8 g at Kaski) than other head type lettuce genotypes and among leaf type variety Green Oak was recorded with highest numbers of leaves (67 at Kavre and 40 at Kaski) and yield (572.3 g at Kavre and 641.9 g at Kaski). So, among head type lettuce genotypes Iceberg performed better as this had better plant spread, large head diameter, more yield and sweet flavor. Among leaf type genotypes Variety Green Oak was found most suitable for Nepali Market as this variety had highest number of leaves and yield among leaf type lettuce genotypes.
Gladiolus is a commercial cut flower whose demand is 6000-8000 spikes/day and increasing day by day because of its majestic spikes. Long vase life is one of the important attributes of cut flowers but due to lack of proper aftermath effects and management flower does not remain consumable for long. This review focuses on different approaches to increase the vase life of the gladiolus cut flower. Cultivation practices, nutrients applied and maturity judgment during cultivation were found as responsible factors to determine the vase life. However, vase solutions containing different concentrations of 8-HQC, salicylic acid, Humic acid, silver nanoparticles, and sucrose (energy source) influence the vase life considerably. The number of Gamma rays and light also determines the vase life of gladiolus cut spikes by diminishing chromosomal aberration was seen higher responsible for improving flower opening and vase life. Gladiolus is extremely sensitive to Fluoride, so it is better not to use water from contaminated sources during the preparation of the preservative solution.
Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) is one of the most commercially important cut flowers of the world. It can be used for cut flowers, bedding, edging, boarders, pots and rock garden. Four Spanish carnation varieties were tested with three levels of boron under ultra-violet stabilized polytunnels from August 2017 to April 2018 at Godawari, Nepal. The objective of the research was to evaluate vegetative, floral, and vase life parameters in relations to growth, yield and quality of carnation. The research was conducted in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The variety Baltico had the maximum leaf length (19.3 cm), numbers of lateral branches (10.5), internodal length (5.1 cm), flower diameter (8.6 cm), and vase life (24.0 days). The numbers of nodes (5) and flower weight (25.4 g) were highest in the variety Vinco with the lowest cracked area on the stem (0.2 cm2/ crack). The numbers of stem cracks per plant significantly (p ≤0.01) reduced with an increasing level of boron though non-significant relation was observed on 60 ppm and 120 ppm. Variety Baltico was found as a better variety compared to the Vinco, Cervantes and Master varieties according to the vegetative, floral, yield and vase life parameters. Among the levels of boron tested, 60 ppm was found as the optimum dose. Thus, variety Baltico and 60 ppm boron is suggested to be used at the climatic condition of Lalitpur.
