OBJECTIVE: To determine perinatal outcomes of children of adolescent mothers against the ones of children of non-adolescent mothers in a second level class hospital in Mexico. METHODOLOGY: Case-control studies applied at "Hospital del Niño y la Mujer" from the National Health Department of Queretaro, Qro. from September 1 st , 2015 to January 30 th , 2016. A sample of 60 medical records of teenage pregnant women was studied. In addition to 90 medical records of women between 20 to 35 years old who had an obstetric event. The analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics. With a 95% confidence interval and a value of p < 0.05. RESULTS:The average age range was 17.38 and 25.33 respectively. The quantitative variables, statistically significant with a p<0.05, were: weight and Apgar score one minute after birth, whereas in weeks of gestation, height and Apgar score five minutes after birth and after days of hospitalization, there was no change. The most frequent qualitative variables among adolescent women were: complications during childbirth (15%), complications with the newborn (18.3%), and route of termination of pregnancy by caesarean section (70%), while in pregnant women between 20 to 35 years old, the complications during the pregnancy were more frequent (51.1%). CONCLUSIONS: Pregnancy among adolescent women continues to have a higher mortality rate than in 20 to 35 year-old women, although it is less European Scientific Journal July 2016 edition vol.12, No.21 ISSN: 1857 -7881 (Print) e -ISSN 1857 26 frequent than in previous years. It is necessary to promote sexual education to reduce the incidence in this age group. There are more than 1 billion people with disabilities worldwide, with 16% of children having some type of neurodevelopmental disorder (ND). In Mexico, 6% of the population presented some disability; however, there is a lack of data on ND in children under 5 years of age. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of neurodevelopmental alterations in children under 5 years of age in urban, suburban, and rural populations from two states of Mexico. Methods: This was an observational and cross-sectional design study. We included 501 clinically healthy children from 0 to 60 months of age, from urban, suburban, and rural populations from the state of Queretaro ( 201) and from the State of Mexico (300). Neurodevelopmental alterations were detected through the electronic N-PED system, exploring areas of neurological development of language, psychomotor, and sensory (auditory and visual). The positive subjects were clinically assessed to confirm the diagnosis. Results: A 14.7% prevalence of ND was found, with a significant difference between Queretaro (8.9%) and the State of Mexico (18.7%). Language alterations were significantly different for both states (4.9% and 16% for Queretaro and the State of Mexico, respectively). Conclusions: The prevalence of ND and language alterations presented significant differences between the two evaluated states.
Infection in humans by the intestinal protozoan of cockroaches and termites called Lophomonas blattarum has been diagnosed in respiratory infections of children aged 2-5 years contaminated orally or by air, with cysts or trophozoites contained in the feces of the cockroach Periplaneta americana. In respiratory infections of adults, it is difficult to diagnose since the cyst or trophozoite is not recognized as a human pathogen and is only related to immunosuppressed patients, transplant patients with severe lung disease and those living in poor and unhealthy sanitary conditions. Normally, its presence is manifested with fevers of 38-39°C, cough with thick expectoration, respiratory insufficiency and pulmonary abscesses. The laboratory diagnosis is mainly based on bronchoscopic cytologies and bronchoalveolar lavage biopsies. The case in question is about a 60-year-old male. Single, he lives alone, with a diagnosis of 9 baths behind non-Hodgkin lymphoma, undergoing treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. For edema after treatment, thoracentesis and pericardiocentesis were performed, as well as gastrostomy, which he maintained for 1 year. He started with throat discomfort, followed by production of productive cough without blood, general weakness, and difficulty breathing, with apparent diagnosis of possible respiratory failure due to mycobacteria. It was possible to visualize the protozoan, in fresh preparations of bronchial aspirate and expectoration in wet assembly with saline solution and stained with Pap smears, Harris Hematoxylin and Eosin (H/E), and Giemsa.
